Ovarian restoration and child-birth

During her late 20’s the woman decided to have a child. Doctors grafted her cryopreserved tissue, and within five months she started menstruating. She was able to become pregnant naturally and give birth to a baby boy when she turned 27.

First study restoring fertility from cryopreserved ovarian tissue taken from a patient before menarche

Although a number of studies have reported live births from transplanted, cryopreserved ovarian tissue, they were all performed in adults. This is the first report of a successful live birth, where ovarian tissue was cryopreserved from an individual who had not had her first menstrual cycle.

However, the lead author of this study Dr. Isabelle Demeestere, said that the procedure must only be performed in patients who are at a very high risk of ovarian failure, due to chemotherapy. This is because the transplantation and graft procedures can result in either damaging the ovarian tissue or reintroducing malignant cells, respectively

Nonetheless, this study demonstrates feasibility of the procedure even when performed during childhood.
